SDSU Water Tunnel

The San Diego State University water tunnel is a closed-loop, variable-pressure, and low-turbulence intensity water tunnel suitable for turbulence, cavitation, and unsteady aerodynamics research. The test section of the tunnel has a cross-section of 4”x5”, and length of 24”, with a flow speed surpassing 6.4 meter per second at a volume flow rate of 1320 gallons per minute. To facilitate PIV flow field diagnosis, all four-side walls of the test section are made of transparent acrylic material. This state-of-the-art university lab-scale water tunnel can be either pressurized up to 5 atmosphere to suppress cavitation from occurring or depressurized to allow it to occur using a compressor and a vacuum pump, respectively.
